We beat statistics. Ask me how! Coming from a single parent home and being a Black woman in America has its share of statistics, trust me. About seven years ago I was introduced to the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) assessment. I easily scored a 10. It took me back for a moment. However, once I realized all of the odds stacked against me, specifically the risk factors that I BEAT, I became interested in answering the HOW questions.

How did I overcome so many risk factors? How am I a Black woman in a America, one who was raised in single parent home, on welfare (government assistance), low-rent housing (subsidized housing), receiving hooked on phonics reading interventions, and a destructive understanding of self (low self-esteem) manage to obtain a B.S., M.S. and PHD? HOW!?! Because with trauma there can be the ACT OF RESILIENCE and I found that RESILIENCE lives in me. Incorporating self-awareness, mindfulness, self-care, positive relationships, and purpose can go a long way!
